- The inner layer that is in contact with your skin should be a material that does not retain moisture and that is fitted but non-restrictive. Wool and polypropylene mesh are the best examples of this type of material. Avoid cotton as this fabric takes up moisture and quickly becomes damp, thus you will get wet and cold. The Brynje mesh inner layers come in various thicknesses and weights. Choose according to the activity level and outside temperature. The more open Wool Thermo (WT) and SUPERthermo® weave improves moisture transport while providing better insulation properties than the tighter weave. The small weave mesh, the Wool Thermo Light (WTL) collection, is often a good choice where there is sustained exertion but no need for high insulation, like Nordic skiing.
- The first middle layer should be somewhat looser than the inner layer but still have good contact with the inner layer to trap air. The first middle layer should provide insulation but also transport moisture away from the inner layer to the outer layer. Fleece, wool, polypropylene and polyester are examples of material you should choose. A big plus is a garment that has more venting adjustability with a long front zip, high collar and/or hood and thumb loops.
- The second mid layer should be a lightweight insulating garment like a fleece or puffy vest, puffy jacket or wool sweater. This layer will provide insulation and can be worn as an outer layer or removed during periods of high exertion.
- The outer layer should block the wind and weather while allowing moisture to escape. Common garments are shell jackets of GoreTex® or similar waterproof/breathable material. It is also important that there is additional ventilation under the arms, an adjustable hood and long zipper. You should choose your outer layer based on your level of activity and environment.
By dressing in layers, you can easily adjust for the temperature and your activity level by putting on or taking off extra items of clothing. The order in which items are often removed (or added) are gloves, hat, outer layer then second mid layer. Be aware that your clothes may lose their properties if you do not follow the maintenance advice for the garment. Proper care of your clothing not only provides better longevity and performance, it also makes you safer.
